The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning
(CETL) organizes several book discussions per year on topics related
to teaching and learning. Copies of all the books for these
sessions are available from the CETL offices in Beeson Hall. Contact
Deborah Vess at x3517 for your free
copy of the book or drop by our offices on the ground level of Beeson.
Here are the topics we have recently discussed,
as well as those we plan to discuss during 2004-2005 and 2005-2006:
2003-4:
Teaching With Your Mouth Shut, by Donald L. Finkel.
Thanks to Megan Melancon and Robin Harris for organizing this
discussion.
2004-5: In the fall, we discussed
Educating Citizens, by Anne Colby, Thomas Ehrlich, et al.
Dr. Jamil Zainaldin, President of the Georgia Humanities Council, led
this discussion for us.
In March 2005 we discussed the issues raised n Steven
Richardson, ed.,
Promoting Civility.
We have a special treat this spring, as we have arranged for
faculty to participate in an online workshop by
Sally Kuhlenschmidt,
Western Kentucky University, who is one of the authors of the articles
in the featured text. GC&SU faculty will be able to
interact with faculty at Western Kentucky as well as with Sally.
We look forward to a lively exchange of ideas. More details will
follow.
In April, we were treated to a discussion of Mary Huba and Jann Freed's
Learner-Centered Assessment on College Campuses: Shifting the Focus from
Teaching to Learning. Mary Huba offered a workshop to 45
participants from the university.
2005-6: Our Fall 2005 Faculty Teaching and Learning Day,
scheduled for August 12, 2005, from 9:00-12:00 in the A&S auditorium
featured a
presentation/workshop by Ken Bain
and participants received a copy of his book,
What the Best College
Teachers Do. We provided lunch to the participants.
In October 2005, our fall book discussion will be on Todd
Oppenheimer's
The Flickering Mind: The False Promise of Technology in the Classroom
and How Learning Can Be Saved.
If you would like to participate in a CETL book
discussion or to suggest a book, please contact Dr.
Deborah Vess. We look forward to seeing you at these events.
