Georgia College & State University has over 88 buildings to manage and maintain. Several of these are historical, and must be retrofitted with energy efficient lighting and insulation.
Design of new buildings should follow the recommendations of the University System of Georgia's Sustainable Energy Management Plan. A complete energy efficiency program is contained in the US Green Building Council LEED program.
Historic buildings are difficult to heat, light, and cool. GCSU has made many improvements to our historic buildings:
Landscaping Options at GCSU
GCSU campus contains thousands of square feet of landscaping. The dominant plant species are chosen for their durability in the Georgia summer heat, and also for their drought tolerance. In addition, campus landscapers select species that bring color to the campus.
Policy Recommendations
Policy recommendations for building design and landscaping alternatives are currently being developed by the GCSU Green Initiative Task Force.
Building Design and Landscaping Alternatives for the Community
Our campus is involved in many community assistance programs. Several members of the GCSU community give back to the local area through Habitat for Humanity. This Georgia-based organization is helping lead the way in developing low carbon imprint housing choices.
Global Implications of Building Design and Landscaping
Housing and office buildings consume enormous quantities greenhouse gases. Especially when buildings are closed, they should have their lights off and their energy requirements reduced.
