Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What courses do you offer tutoring in?

A. On the "Tutoring Schedule" page you will find all the courses that we are currently offering tutoring as well as the days and times when a tutor will be available in the Learning Center.

Q. What does it cost?

A. Tutoring in the Learning Center is a free service offered to all registered students.

Q. Do I need to make an appointment?

A. No. All Learning Center tutoring services are handled on a walk-in basis.

Q. Do I need my Bobcat ID?

A. Yes. All students seeking services at the Learning Center are required to swipe their Bobcat Card into the Bobcat Scan Card System. This allows the Learning Center to track the number of students utilizing our services and for which courses student require the most help. With these numbers, we are able to staff the Learning Center appropriately.

Q. Is tutoring conducted individually or in groups?

A. Both. Sometimes a student will want to work with a tutor individually on a particular question or on study skills. Other times, students working on similar homework problems or concepts will come in as a group or join a group already in a session with a tutor.

Q. Will I have the same tutor each time?

A. No, not always. The tutor that you work with the first time may not be the one that you work with again. However, it will be easier for you and the tutor if you will build a working relationship with one tutor. The tutor will be able to assess your needs and can determine how best to assist you in future sessions.

Q. What if I don't like the tutor that I have been working with?

A. We understand that not everyone is suited to everyone else, especially in a learning situation. There are personality differences and learning/tutoring styles that may not match. Our tutors are trained not to take it personally if you would prefer to work with someone else. Please don't be embarrassed or shy to request another tutor. We are here to help you succeed and sometimes that means finding a tutor that you feel comfortable with. If you prefer, talk to the coordinator of the Learning Center about your concerns.

Q. Can I request a private tutor?

A. Yes. However, private tutors are not paid for by the Learning Center. We usually have some college students who offer their services for tutoring during the semester. We keep their name on file and if someone requests a private tutor, we will forward the information to the tutor. Private tutors charge $8.00-$15.00 per hour. You will be responsible for paying the tutor and arranging a suitable schedule for your sessions. Please note: The Learning Center does not screen these individuals for tutoring ability or quality. We do not train them and can not be held responsible for missed appointments, missed payments or incorrect information.
