What is PHISHING?
In a phishing attack, the bad guy (or gal) will create an email or web page looking very official, generally using logos or graphics stolen from a well known bank, retailer, etc. The email or website will inform you that you need to logon using some personal information to modify or verify your account in some way. After you login with your Social Security Number, password, or credit card number your information will then be in the hands of the criminal to do with as they wish. I would strongly urge you to look closely at any email instructing you to “verify” personal information as a possible phishing attack.
What do I do if I suspect that I may have received a PHISHY email?
If you suspect that an email is a fake you can delete it or if you wish to investigate further, use the phone number on an account statement and simply ask customer service if the email is valid. No credible financial institution that I have ever heard sends out this type of request over the web.
