Dr. Les Crawford's Retirement

The John H. Lounsbury School of Education announces the retirement of Dr. Leslie W. Crawford on September 1, 2006 and celebrates his 50 years of teaching students in America and several foreign countries.

To pay tribute to Dr. Crawford, friends and family are donating money in his name to the GCSU Foundation. We plan to complete the collection of Caldecott Award and Caldecott Honor Books in the GCSU library.  So far we have donations to purchase not only all the Caldecott Award Books that the library did not have, but also to order the Caldecott Honor Books from 1952-2006.  Eventually, we hope to acquire the rest of the honor books since the inception of the award in 1938.

Each of the books purchased will have a face-plate recognizing Dr. Crawford. Additionally, in the electronic card catalog, each volume will have a notation that the book was purchased for Les, too.  His department, Early Childhood and Middle Grades Education, has made a commitment to obtain future Caldecott Award Books and Caldecott Honor Books in respect for Dr. Crawford. A plaque has been placed in the library as a tribute to him.

A reception was held for Dr. Crawford in the library atrium on April 5, 2006.  Please see http://library.gcsu.edu/events/LesCrawford/ for pictures of the event.  A dinner for Les was arranged at the Milledgeville Country Club where he was presented with an autographed copy of the 2006 Caldecott Award Winning Book, The Hello, Goodbye Window written by Norton Juster and illustrated by Chris Raschka.  People wrote celebratory notes to Dr. Crawford in the book, and he seemed genuinely thrilled.
