SOE Student John Harmon on Ellen DeGeneres Show and Darius Goes West Documentary
"Darius Weems, a 15-year-old with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, had never left his hometown of Athens, Georgia. In the summer of 2005, he and a group of young college students traveled across the country in a wheelchair-accessible RV to test accessibility in America. Their ultimate goal was to reach Los Angeles and convince MTV's hit show, "Pimp My Ride," to customize Darius's wheelchair. Along the way, they found joy, brotherhood, and the knowledge that life, even when imperfect, is always worth the ride." (from Dariusgoeswest.com)
Darius Weems appeared on the Ellen DeGeneres show Monday evening, Nov. 12, 2007. Darius was helped by 11 young men from the Athens, Georgia area to go on the trip of a lifetime to the West. John Harmon, one of Dr. Lynn McMullen's cohort members, was one of young men.
Their experiences about MD, accessibility issues, and being Darius' friend were documented in a film, Darius Goes West (Dariusgoeswest.com ). This documentary has won awards at various film festivals and may be nominated for an academy award. John will be in the audience on the Ellen show, as several people are needed for Darius' care and support.
The documentary on DVD is scheduled to be released through the Darius Goes West website in early December.
