National Writing Center Site Approved at GCSU
Dr. Linda Golson (SOE) and Dr. Dan Bauer (A&S) were recently notified by
Richard Sterling, director of the National Writing Project (NWP) in
California that their application to establish a new site at Georgia College
has been funded. The grant awards $30,000 the first year and $45,000
every year after. While continued funding is not automatic, whenever the NWP
funds a new site, they do so with the "expectation and faith" that they will
continue to fund the program in successive years. Because GCSU will use the
funds to pay graduate tuition for the 18 area teachers who will take part in
the summer institute, this grant is good news at the university and
community levels.
In addition to the new Central Georgia Writing Project at Georgia College,
the NWP also has announced funding for a new site at West Georgia. These
two new sites join the six existing sites in Georgia (Kennesaw, Americus,
Athens, Savannah, Valdosta, and Statesboro). The project coordinators have
planned the GCSU institute for four full weeks (8 hours a day) in June, in
addition to continued programming and outreach to area schools throughout
the year.
A NWP staff liaison will be contacting Drs. Bauer and Golson soon to make
arrangements for a rigorous on-site planning visit in early spring. But
even before that, Linda and Dan will begin almost immediately to create web
sites and promotional materials, to reserve classroom space, and to plan how
graduate credit will be awarded in accordance with the timeline submitted
with the grant.
