    Annual Report FY 2002-2003
    June 3, 2003

    The 2002-2003 academic year has shown continued inclusion of staff in regards to decisions made at the university. Staff Council was officially included in the new GC&SU statutes approved by USG Board of Regents February 5, 2003. A permanent seat in the newly established form of government, University Senate, was awarded to the Staff Council chair position. Options exist which would allow the possibility of additional staff members to be included as well.

    Staff Council has provided more opportunities for feedback and responses have steadily increased. There has also been an increase in the requests to meet with Staff Council Officers and to present items to the council. For example: Harry Keim and Human Resources met with Staff Council concerning automatic payroll deposit changes for new employees and Chancellor Thomas Meredith requested a meeting with the Staff Council officers May 2, 2003, to listen to what qualities staff
    would like to see in a new president. A staff member currently is a member on the Presidential Search Committee.

    The overall concern of staff employees is the delay in the implementation of the pay plan study due to the economic conditions presently existing in the state of Georgia. Staff also desires a uniform timetable regarding employee evaluations. These issues will continue to be a concern and focus for the next year or until resolution.

    Staff Council Accomplishments:

    Development funds were used to support 130 seminars, professional development courses and the
    annual university system staff conference
    Co-sponsored the annual Employee Benefits Fair
    Instrumental in obtaining "supervisory training"
    Supported a new employee performance evaluation form and subsequent training of employees
    and supervisors
    Requested and obtained e-mail training for Physical Plant employees
    Promoted free attendance for staff, faculty and their families for Homecoming
    Supported local community (Think Pink Week, GCANS) and national charities (Relay for Life)
    Sponsored an end-of the-year Staff Appreciation Social
    Increased awareness of our two "Staff Excellence Awards" ceremonies
    Awarded a permanent seat on the University Senate. Appointments of two additional staff
    members were included for two-year terms.
    Compiled a list of staff members to participate in a staff technology group to provide input to the
    CIO
    Provided confidential suggestion boxes in Physical Plant
    Provided GC&SU hats for Physical Plant employees
    Developed defined guidelines for the use of staff development funds
    Supported electronic deposit for payroll check
    Attended every New Employee Orientation and provided information on Staff Council and Staff Development Funds
    Created a "Staff Opportunities Brochure" for prospective and new staff employees
