STAFF COUNCIL MEETING
2:00 p.m., January 16, 2002
CHAPPELL 106

Present: Cindy Diaz (presiding), Rose Murner, Alma Hall, Bill Bloodworth, Neil Jones, Terri Pope, Ann Portwood, Barbara Monnett, Ainsley Eubanks, Lindy Ruark, Valerie Smykal-Tieger, Robert Ethier, Lynda Grable, and Quintus Sibley. Absent: Kenneth Manson. Guests: Mike Rose, Lorianne Strawder, Paula Jefferson, Dixie Evans, Sam Basinger, Toi Franks, and Angela Criscoe.

Call to order/Approval of the minutes. Cindy opened the meeting, and a motion was made, seconded, and passed to approve the minutes from the last meeting as written.

Faculty Senate update. Mike Rose attended the meeting. He wanted to provide staff information about Faculty Senate and the statutes. Faculty Senate does not plan to make a recommendation that Staff Council change its name.

Revisions/recommendations for Staff Council. Cindy and Barbara will meet with Dr. DePaolo, Faculty Senate representatives, and Hugh Hudson concerning the statute revisions.

GIVE Center. Kendall announced plans for upcoming events such as the blood drive, Bowl for Kids Sake, homecoming, open house for the GIVE Center, and staff appreciation night at a basketball game. She also shared some information on the newly formed 1200 Club, a giving program for faculty and staff to establish scholarships for students with SAT scores of 1200. We will be hearing more about this totally voluntary program later.

Staff awards. Last year's Staff Excellence Award ceremony went extremely well and was well attended. We are still in discussion about the way in which we want to handle the list of nominees for this award-whether we want to notify them of their nomination or whether we want to read aloud their names at the ceremony. We will continue to recognize the newly hired staff at the award ceremony.

Relay for Life. Angela and Toi are co-captains of the Staff Council Relay for Life team this year, and they shared some plans for this event. They welcome suggestions from all staff. Relay for Life will be April 19 and 20.

Staff Corner March. Barbara asked that anyone with ideas for this send her their suggestions. We may be able to highlight our Relay for Life activities in the March issue.

FISH. We have had to reschedule this session with Lynn Allen. This is training session that promotes customer service and working together. Staff Council has been asked to endorse it, and we want to try it first before we give it our recommendation. Lynn will present this session at our meeting in March.

Elections for 2002-2003. Cindy asked for volunteers to assist with our election for the upcoming year. Rose volunteered to coordinate nominations and the election.

Foundation Awards. The deadline for nominations for these awards is February 22. Anyone can nominate someone for the different categories. The awards ceremony will be in April.

Other Business.
There is a committee working to revise the current staff evaluation forms. Terri distributed samples for delegates to share with their areas and solicit input and feedback. Any suggestions/comments should be sent to Terri or Cindy.

Cindy distributed a sample of our new Staff Council note cards, and Alma reported on the budget.

Cindy asked for suggestions for another staff appreciation event like the highly successful ice cream social we held last year in Kilpatrick. May might be a good time to hold this event.

Adjournment. The meeting adjourned at 3:15 p.m. Our next meeting will be Thursday, March 7 at 2:00 p.m. in Chappell 106.
