GCSU campus saddened by death of student athlete
The Georgia College & State University campus is mourning the death of its student, John Bruner, who died suddenly after collapsing during a charity race sponsored by the American Red Cross in Chattanooga, Tennessee on Saturday, August 4th. Bruner, 19, was due to begin his sophomore year at GCSU this fall. He was also a member of the university's cross country team. "Our campus is shocked and saddened by John's sudden passing, and our hearts and prayers go out to his family and friends," said GCSU President Dorothy Leland. "John will be remembered for his many contributions to our school, both as an athlete and as a model student. He will be deeply missed." Bruner was nearing the end of the 4.7 mile race when he collapsed. He was initially treated on the scene by two doctors and a nurse who had also participated in the race. He was then taken to Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga where he died. "John was a valued member of our athletics department, and our condolences go to the Bruner family," said GCSU Athletics Director Stan Aldridge. "He was a regular starter for the Bobcats cross country team and always gave his very best to everything he did." Bruner was a resident of Dalton, Georgia, where he had been the captain of the Dalton High School cross country team. "He was just an outstanding kid," said GCSU cross country coach Joe Samprone. "A good student, good runner, good person. There was nothing but positives to say about John."
