He arrived at Georgia College as a basketball coach, and 32 years later retires as an icon in the annals of GCSU athletics.
GCSU Director of Athletics Dr. J. Stanley Aldridge announced his retirement effective March 31.
Aldridge joined the Georgia College athletics department as head men’s basketball coach during the 1974-75 season. After 12 years as coach, he took over assistant athletic director duties in 1986. In January 1991, Aldridge was named athletic director.
The Aldridge era has been one of the most successful in school history. Under his guidance, the Colonials and then Bobcats have made the transition to the NCAA Division II, won regional titles in baseball, softball and men’s basketball as well as multiple Peach Belt Conference (PBC) titles.
Aldridge played an important role in building the women’s soccer program at GCSU, beginning in 2004. An interim athletics director will be named shortly, with plans for a national search for a full-time replacement.
The GCSU Department of Athletics sponsors 10 NCAA Division II athletic programs over three seasons. As a Division II program, GCSU prides itself on balancing the life of the student-athlete, evidenced by the Bobcats’ multiple appearances in post-season competition as well as documented academic success and community-service involvement.
