Georgia College & State University will honor the bicentennial of Mendelssohn’s birth with a concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, at First Baptist Church in Milledgeville. The concert will feature more than 100 students in the University Chorus, Women’s Ensemble and Max Noah Singers, all directed by Dr. Jennifer Flory. Dr. Daniel Kaplunas will conduct the orchestra.
"We are always happy to join forces with University Chorus,” Kaplunas said. “We have done several large projects in the past, such as Mozart's Requiem and Handel's Messiah. These are always the most enjoyable and memorable performances for our players, singers, and audiences.”
Mendelssohn is known as one of the more conservative composers of the Romantic era. His work includes symphonies, concertos, oratorios, piano and chamber music. Various excerpts from his oratorios will be sung along with motets for women’s chorus and German folksongs. The orchestra will present the virtuosic first movement of Mendelssohn’s famous E Minor Violin Concerto with professional soloist, Juhee Lee, a native of Chung-Ju, Korea.
“The pieces all vary from fast-paced and buoyant to slow and reverent. I'm really excited to sing all the sides of Mendelssohn,” said University Chorus member Ala Bishop.
Admission is free and donations will be collected for the American Heart Association, whose mission is to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke, in light of Mendelssohn’s death by a series of strokes.
Georgia College Choral Ensembles consist of University Chorus, Women’s Ensemble, and the auditioned Max Noah Singers. Flory has served as director of choral activities of Georgia College since August 2005. The Max Noah Singers embark on an annual performance and recruiting tour in December.
