Georgia College and State University joins the nation to celebrate National Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month with a series of events in Sept. and Oct., under the theme “Embracing The Fierce Urgency of Now!” Events will take place through Oct. 22. The ceremonies, sponsored by GCSU’s Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity, the Latino Student Association, Black Student Alliance, and the Salsa and Latin Dance Club, will kick off to the rhythmic sounds of tango where participants will have the opportunity to learn basic tango movements.
Latino Heritage Month not only celebrates the rich Latino cultures, musical traditions and contributions, but also honors the outstanding contributions of individuals of Latino descent at GCSU, and in the world who have contributed to the advancement of Latinos in the United States and worldwide. “This year’s celebration of the contributions of Latino/a(s) to the United States is particularly gratifying given the recent appointment of Judge Sonia Sotomayor as the first Latina justice to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court,” Javier Francisco, GCSU Associate Director of Enrollment Management
Latino Heritage Month at Georgia College launches a month-long calendar of cultural events, films, a symposium and an art exhibit entitles, “Beyond Words: Mas Alla de Las Palabras” GCSU’s Professor of Art, South Carolina artist Valerie Arranda in collaboration with Alejandro Garcia Lemos.
The symposium will focus on the Latino experience in Georgia in which the keynote speaker, Fred Johnson will discuss efforts in Dalton, GA to improve Latino and African-American relations.
