Georgia College prepares for state-mandated furlough day

Georgia College faculty and staff will take their first mandated furlough day Monday, Oct. 12.

The campus will be closed but will not interrupt student classes. Students celebrate their first Fall Break on Monday, Oct. 12 and Tuesday, Oct. 13.

"Although this is not a circumstance that any of us desired, I am grateful for the manner in which you are coping with the reality of furloughs and your continued concern for people who are struggling in the current economic environment--on and off campus," President Dorothy Leland wrote in campus-wide email Wednesday.

The Strategic Resource Management Task Force recommended that we link faculty and staff to volunteer activities on designated furlough days. Two volunteer opportunities for the first furlough day are noted below for interested faculty and staff.
  • Andalusia
For faculty and staff who enjoy outdoor work, consider bringing your work gloves, landscape and gardening tools to Andalusia, the historic farm where acclaimed author and Georgia College graduate Flannery O'Connor lived from 1951 until her death in 1964. Work begins at 10 a.m. Monday. To get to Andalusia, travel north on U.S. Highway 411 past the Wal-Mart shopping center. Look for Badcock Home Furniture on the right side of the highway as you leave Milledgeville. The driveway to Andalusia is located on the left side of Highway 441 just beyond the furniture store.

  • Feed the Children
If you live near Macon or would otherwise enjoy driving there for shopping or a meal, consider joining a group of Georgia College volunteers who will deliver food to needy families in Macon. In addition to food, the children of these families will receive free Big Read books. Doris Christopher is coordinating this group. Contact her by email (doris.christopher@gcsu.edu) to learn more about this volunteer opportunity.
The University will re-open on Tuesday, October 13 but classes will not resume until Wednesday, October 14.
