What happens when an MBA graduate from Yale also gets an MFA in Painting from Slade School of Fine Art in London? Published author Amy Whitaker knows first-hand what such a person can accomplish. Her first book, “Museum Legs” has had glowing reviews from artists and professors.
During a recent visit to Milledgeville, Whitaker captivated the audience during a reading and book signing at Blackbird Café. Several Georgia College students, as well as a faculty member or two, dined on cookies and coffee while Whitaker read an excerpt from her book.
Whitaker, daughter of Dr. Elaine Whitaker Chair of the English Department at Georgia College, expertly adjusted her excerpt and anecdotes for her audience at Andalusia the following morning. Twenty members from the community gathered in the dining room of Andalusia, former home of Flannery O’Connor.
“We are delighted she made Andalusia one of the stops on her book tour,” said Craig Amason, Director of Andalusia.
The setting reminded those present of the times when O’Connor would hold readings in the dining hall and invite friends and family to meet for discussion.
“When I started writing, I thought it would take six months,” said Whitaker. “If I knew now what I knew then, that it would take eight years, then I probably wouldn’t have started.”
Those eight years have been well spent. Whitaker worked as a researcher for Harvard, earned her MFA in Painting, and gained employment with a large investment firm. She splits her working time between New York and London.
“I had a longer time outside of the arts so I could better imagine my audience,” said Whitaker.
Whitaker’s insight into the museum scene appeals to a variety of audiences. Her blend of anecdotes and art information will keep anyone, from the serious artist to the hurried student, captivated.
