Georgia College & State University’s Special Collections hosts a screening of “Wise Blood” on Wednesday, Aug. 19 in the Museum Education Room. The DVD adaptation of Flannery O’Connor’s novel recently became available through the Criterion Collection.
The star-studded cast features the talents of director John Huston and actor Brad Dourif. Huston capably adapts O’Connor’s novel to the screen in an evocative journey of one man’s search for salvation. Dourif portrays Hazel Motes, a troubled young war veteran searching for truth.
“The book serves more as a parable and the film exposes more of the surrealist themes of the time,” said Chris Ellis, Archival Associate of Special Collections.
The Criterion Collection rereleases films considered of great significance and includes additional features to heighten the viewing experience. The former VHS copies of the film were not of optimal quality; due to the age of the copy there were some technical issues with lighting and sound. Special Collections provided audio of Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find” for one of the special features on the DVD.
Dr. Bruce Gentry, editor of Flannery O’Connor Review, will provide the introduction at 7 p.m.
The screening is free and open to the public. Two copies of the DVD are available for loan from the Georgia College library.
